As Biz Stone puts it 'Blogs are taking over the web at warp speed.' (Stone 2002, p.3). So, what is a blog exactly? According to Sweeney (2006, p.317) 'Blogs are Web logs on a Web site that are updated on a regular basis, with the most recent posting appearing at the top of the blog.'. Based on the statistics shown by BlogPulsean automated trend discovery system for blogs, shows there are more than 168 million identified blogs and increasing every day.

According to Technorati’s state of blogosphere 2010 report, current growing trend is mobile blogging and female bloggers. The introduction of android phones and tablet PCs changes the traditional long blog posts to simplified posts. Also, Technorati’s report shows that female bloggers have strong influential powers across the globe. In Asia, the famous female bloggers are Xiaxueand Dawn Yang.

In Malaysia, politically contentious blogging is prevalent. A research done by Dr Abu Hassan Hasbullah shows 70% of the election results were influenced by information in the blogs. (The Star Online, 2008). Walsh (2007, p.3) stated 'Now, bloggers are breaking news, and reporters and editors are chasing their dust as they cover stories in politics...'. In Malaysia, political blogs such as Screenshot by Jeff Ooi acts as an alternative media for the people to read about the current political issue. The reason to this is the censorship in Malaysia has caused information published by the mainstream media to be biased. Hence, loses its’ credibility in the eyes of public.

Due to the censorship of local mainstream media in Malaysia, the influences of political blogs in Malaysia have risen. The publics who seek for truthful information will read these blogs rather than the news reported on mainstream media. 'Blogging as an instrument for democratization is only as effective as the civil society behind it.' (Tan & Ibrahim, 2008, p. 75). Blogs provide a space for an open discussion for Malaysian public. Thus, these media platforms have helped the people of Malaysia to strive true democracy.
